Introduction to Bib Numbers

Since Bill Bowerman returned from a vacation to New Zealand and wrote a book titled Jogging, a fitness revolution has been taking hold all over the world: running for fitness and for fun. In 1970, 127 people competed in the New York City Marathon; by 2009 that number had swelled to over 43 000. The Berlin Marathon has grown from 244 competitors in 1974 to nearly 41 000 in 2008. We as runners know what you are thinking...this is absolutely fantastic news!! But 127 runners is one thing...how do you keep track of 43 000 people?
The answer lies in bib numbers. Bib numbers are a tool for race directors to tell these thousands of runners apart and to simplify the seemingly impossible task of getting a time for each and every one of these runners. Made of Tyvek ® (a durable, plastic-like paper product), bib numbers are designed to pin onto a t-shirt or racing vest and withstand sweat, rain and tears while moving with the competitors' body. These numbers can be printed to feature an event name, an event logo or a sponsor's logo.

Bib numbers can be synchronized to timing chip systems to eliminate the endless task of matching chips to individual names, and they can be reused, recycled and kept in good condition as mementos. They can even be placed online so supporters can monitor their loved ones' progress every mile from their home computer!

Bib numbers have many event applications, including:
→ Marathons
→ Road Races
→ Track and Field Competitions
→ Cross Country Races
→ Skiing
→ Biking Events
→ Triathlons
→ Baseball, Hockey, Soccer or Football Tryouts
→ Dance Competitions
→ Any other event that you need to differentiate people by way of a highly visible number.
